What’s Rebecca’s Future?

If you haven’t heard about Rebecca Black yet, where have you been hiding?  She’s a 13 year old singer (who started vocal lessons when she was 10).  She’s recently had a video produced by Ark Music Factory for a song called Friday and posted on YouTube.  And that video has gone viral.

Currently the video has been viewed more than 17 million times since the middle of February when it was originally posted (most of those views coming within the last week).  See the video below.

Most of the time a video goes viral for good reasons but in this case, even though the production is serious, the lyrics from the song leave much to be desired.  The song is basically about her getting up in the morning, realizing it’s Friday and she’s looking forward to partying on the weekend.  Yup.  That’s about it.  It gets worse.  Here’s some snippets of the lyrics which really make this song laughable:

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
We-we-we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today

Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes after…wards
I don’t want this weekend to end

I don’t know who wrote the song but if Rebecca had chosen a better song to sing, I think she would be more respected.  She does have a decent voice.  Even though her “Friday” sounds more like “Fried Egg.”

There are those who are making fun of this situation all over social media outlets but I, like many others I’m sure, feel sorry for Rebecca.  Hopefully she’s strong enough to make it through this and continue on with her dream to be a singer.  But, I can just see it years down the road people referring to her still as that “Friday” girl and snickering.

The Internet and social media has certainly helped spread news and reviews quicker than ever.  We just witnessed this when a 10 year old girl from Winnipeg (Yay Winnipeg!), Maria Aragon sang the Lady Gaga tune “Born This Way.”  Lady Gaga was made aware of the video (below) posted on YouTube and commented via twitter about it, making that video go viral (over 26 million views).  Maria appeared on the Ellen show, Good Morning America and even got to go up on stage and sing (and play piano) with Lady Gaga at her concert in Toronto.  Now that’s the power of social media.

In this case, social media skyrocketed Maria’s start in the business.  Hopefully Rebecca’s viral video won’t end hers.
