Daily Deals – Oh Sure, Be Gender Specific!

There’s been a lot of activity lately around the daily deal concept.  If you haven’t heard of this, it’s the latest craze whereby you can sign up for emails from a number of “daily deal” providers.  Each day they promote one local deal which is generally in the 50-70% off the regular price range.

If you’re diligent and plan ahead, you can save yourself a lot of cash but you gotta act fast.  Generally you have one day to decide if you want to purchase the deal or not.  If you decide to purchase, you buy the “coupon” up front then you use it any time up until its expiration date.

There’s a pile of providers out there right now and you may have even heard that probably the most popular one, Groupon, was attempted to be purchased by Google for $6 billion.  Groupon turned them down.  But Groupon isn’t the only one out there.  In fact, Google is creating their own now and we’ll probably see it in operation very soon.  It’s going to be called Google Offers.

Others in operation are:

I bet I know what you’re thinking… “What a great idea!  I love it!”  Here’s the kicker.  In the last number of weeks I’ve taken note that the target audience for these bargains is women.  There, I’ve said it.  Almost everything offered is specifically for women.  Don’t believe me?  Here’s a sample of the deals they have offered recently:

  • Eyelash Extensions
  • Jewelery
  • Pedicures
  • Manicures
  • Professional Photography Shoot – we all know that its the women who want these, guys.. just stand there and smile
  • Shoes
  • Fleece Clothing – the picture in the email had kids and women only.
  • Hot Yoga – I do know some guys that have done hot yoga but they’ve said they were the only guys in the class

So I mentioned this to my wife.  I said, “where’s all the deals for the guys out there?”  Here’s what I’m looking for:

  • 50% off a round of golf (no restrictions like you have to play Monday – Thursday between 2:00pm and 2:15pm but only if it’s raining, oh and there’s lightning!)
  • 75% off a case of 24 bottles of Kokanee beer
  • Buy $50 of fishing tackle and receive an additional $35 of fishing tackle free
  • Receive 4 free drinks with the purchase of a round of golf
  • 2 for 1 packs of Titleist Pro V golf balls
  • One free team pitcher of beer when the team orders at least $30 of food

Things like that would definitely appeal to me.  Recently there was a deal for 55% off the price of 18 holes of virtual golf.  My wife was quick to point this out to me.  It’s a start, but virtual golf isn’t the same as golf.  It’s like if someone offered a deal on miniature golf.  I mean, come on.

So, I will continue to monitor what’s being offered.  Hopefully come summer some of these testosterone-driven deals will start appearing.

Now go out there and sign up for these daily deals!
